How to deal with stress?
Stress is a part of life, therefore how we deal with it is important. Stress can come from exams, work and life in general. Dealing with stress is difficult but, I can ensure you that applying these tips to your own life will help to reduce stress, and to feel more relaxed. Mental health is important and I really recommend to open up and talk to someone you trust. Below are my tips on how I deal with stress.
“Happiness is a choice. You can choose to be happy. There’s going to be stress in life, but it’s your choice whether you let it affect you or not.” Valerie Bertinelli
(1) Do something that you love.
When feeling stressed, I recommend doing something that you love. This will help you to distract your mind from things and to relax. For example, go shopping, eat good food, paint your nails, listen to music and more. Doing something that you enjoy does not have to be on a bigger scale, it can be a little thing such as, watching your favourite TV show.
You need to take care of yourself and stop putting pressure on yourself. Stress can be overwhelming so treating yourself is essential. Taking a break from reality and doing the stuff you love, will help your mind and body. For me, I love putting makeup on, writing blog posts and just being creative as a whole.
(2) Do some exercise.
Physical activity is an excellent stress reliever. Exercise releases endorphins which make you feel happy and good about yourself. Any form of exercise is good such as a quick jog around your neighbourhood, riding your bike, doing push-ups and etc. I also believe, doing exercise when you’re stressed helps to take out the bad energy inside of you, and makes you feel good about yourself. (*HINT* having a shower after you worked out is the BEST feeling ever as, it makes you feel relaxed and refreshed).
I’ll be honest, it can be difficult to exercise when you have a busy schedule, that is why I recommend to create a workout plan. Find out the hours where you are free to workout and go to the gym. If you don’t want to go gym then create a workout plan. This plan can include very basic exercise movements like, squats, push ups and more. If your schedule is extremely busy then instead of creating a workout plan, make small changes to your day to day life. This could include you walking to work rather than driving or, do the gardening yourself rather than hiring someone.
Exercise in general has many positive outcomes. It helps to reduce stress, takes your mind off certain situations, makes you feel good about yourself and, creates discipline. Any form of exercise is healthy for the mind and helps with anxiety.
(3) Have a shower.
Having a shower makes you feel more refreshed and calm. You feel better after taking a shower because, you are having that time to yourself which helps to reduce stress levels. Personally, taking a shower helps to remove all that bad energy that has been weighing you down. It’s a good way of cleansing your mind, soul and body.
Honestly, whenever I am stressed, I have a warm shower and it always does the trick. It helps me by calming down my nerves and stress levels. Having a shower feels like all my worries and fears are washed away. It’s a good way of freeing your mind and letting go of the stress.
(4) Connect with people.
Spend time with friends, family, work mates and more. This will help you to feel more relaxed and less anxious. Socialising keeps your mind away from whats bothering you, therefore helps you to feel more laid-back and less stressed. I believe everyone has someone to talk to and open up about certain situations. Socialising with people, whether you know them or not, helps the mind. Everyone needs human interactions because, without people you go crazy like in the movie, I Am Legend.
Sometimes talking about what you are stressed about to your friends and family can help, as they can give advice. However, do not feel obligated to explain ‘why you are stressed’ because, it’s a human thing and part of life. Sometimes it’s just better off not saying anything and instead discussing about other things with your friends or family, to distract your mind from what’s stressing you out.
(5) Be positive.
Positive thinking reduces stress and allows you to enjoy life. Turn the negative thoughts into positive thoughts. An example, “I’m going to fail tomorrows exam” turn that into a positive thought, “I will do some revision now and I will try my hardest in the exam. Whatever happens, I know it will be an opportunity for me to learn and it’s not the end of the world”.
Changing your mindset is important. If you continue to have bad thoughts and doubts, you’ll never go far in life and the stress levels will get worse. Changing the negative thoughts into positive thoughts, makes you stronger mentally and physically. Your mind is so powerful that it can play tricks on you. Positive affirmation allows you to start the day right by, having a positive mental attitude. Believing that you are worthy of something and can overcome any obstacle. This automatically reduces stress levels.
